The courses listed on this page were taught at The University of Montevallo. They were taught to undergraduate and graduate students in the Instructional Technology, Elementary Education, and Instructional Leadership programs. ED 446/546: METHODS AND MATERIALS FOR TEACHING LANGUAGE ARTS

 

This course deals with the selection of strategies and construction of language-arts materials for children in early childhood, elementary and middle school settings in teaching language arts across the curriculum. A lab experience is included with the class where students spend part of the semester in a school setting. I supervised a portion of the students and observed their lessons each semester the course was taught.  This course included undergraduate and graduate students.

Extensive lesson planning was included in this course as well as some of the following projects: minilessons , chapter presentations, hands-on centers, Google Maps, Shelfari, Nearpod, and Tic Tac Techo.

ED 446

ED 447/547: INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY FOR TODAY'S TEACHER

 

This course involves reviewing various instructional technologies for the classroom. It includes both undergraduate and graduate students in Elementary, Collaborative, Kinesiology, and DHH majors. I have taught it every fall and spring semester that I have been at the University of Montevallo. It has been redesigned several times and even recently moved to a new block during the program. This course has been delivered face to face, online, and hybrid. It now includes a Lab component where students are in the schools observing and teaching lessons.  Some of the topics/projects that were covered during this course have been blogs, Google learning, electronic portfolios, interactive resumes, social bookmarking, and mobile learning. Videos were recorded to enhance many of the classes and to also help aid in the flipped classroom component of the course. Innovation Stations were designed to help keep students engaged and teach Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics (STEAM) concepts.

ED 447

ED 504: INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

 

This course was taught online and introduced graduate students to the evolution of the standards movement in the early 21st century and its strong political force in today’s schooling. The emphasis of the course is on using innovative instructional designs (i.e. multiple intelligences, learning styles, differentiation, cooperative learning, interdisciplinary learning, problem-based learning, mentoring, service learning, etc.) within a climate of high stakes standards-based curricular accountability.

ED 504

ED 527: COMPUTER-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

 

This graduate level course is primarily for secondary and collaborative alternative certification majors. It is designed to prepare the developing professional to effectively apply computer technology in their chosen field. Active learning experiences provide students with opportunities to develop professional skills and knowledge pertinent to the utilization of word processors, databases, spreadsheets, presentation software, email, and the Internet. Students participated in online discussions, wrote journal article summaries, created a technology integration assignment, and submitted lesson plans to the Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX).

ED 527

ED 528: MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

 

This course is designed to prepare practicing professional educator to use emerging multimedia technologies for instruction, communication, and professional productivity. Emphasis is placed on the technical, aesthetic, and instructional aspects of multimedia development. Students explored Web 2.0 basics, wrote lesson plans infused with technology, and created a presentation about issues surrounding the integration of multimedia tools in the classroom.

ED 528

ED 529: CURRICULUM INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY

 

This hands-on course is intended to help the practicing teacher develop the critical analysis skills necessary to appropriately integrate computer technology into the classroom. Current research and trends in the application of educational technology are investigated and discussed. In this course, the students created a podcast, wrote opinion papers, participated in discussion boards, and developed a course blog.

ED 529

ED 570: SPECIAL TOPICS IN TECHNOLOGY

 

This course deals with special topics and emerging trends in the field of instructional technology. It is an online course taught during May term. Students read, react to, and discuss current topics in education. Students are challenged to make the necessary changes to prepare students for 21st century careers by creating a wiki page on a class wiki. This course was completely composed of graduate students.

ED 601: INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

 

This course is an online course that services graduate students in our Instructional Technology Program. An overview of issues/trends in the development of effective design, along with utilization and evaluation of instructional media to address training/professional development are covered in the class. ED 601

ED 602: TECHNOLOGY TRAINING, COACHING, & MENTORING

 

This is an online course for graduate students in our Instructional Technology Program that addresses evaluation and application of research-based structures, processes, and practices in the development of leadership skills and interpersonal relationships related to mentoring programs, technology training/professional development and peer coaching. Periscope sessions were held throughout the course where students led training sessions for other practitioners in the field.

ED 602

ED 610: TEACHING & MANAGING DISTANCE EDUCATION

 

This course services Instructional Technology program candidates and is for graduate students. Students work on hands-on applications about topics related to distance education that are supported by technological processes. Students also learn about the many different types of eLearning options. One of the major assignments in this course is for the students to design an online course.

ED 610

ED 629: SURVEY OF INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP

 

This course is an online course for graduate students. It is designed to develop broad knowledge and understanding of the effective integration of instructional technology in schools or other educational/training environments. Emphasis is placed on current research and trends, state and national standards, and widely accepted practices in the application and administration of instructional technology. Students participate in module collaborations using Google Docs and begin writing a blog that follows them throughout the program.

ED 629

EDI 470: INTERNSHIP IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

 

This course involved supervising pre-service teachers during their Internship semester. I was the University Supervisor for interns placed at various schools. Some of the schools that I supervised were Helena Intermediate School, Inverness Elementary, and Creek View Elementary School. I observed each of the interns multiple times, conducted internship seminars, collaborated with Cooperating Teachers, and met individually with each intern.

EDI 470

SPED 408/508: EXCEPTIONAL LEARNERS IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD & ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM

 

This course focuses on meeting the needs of the exceptional learner in an inclusive setting and how to access the learner's needs in order to plan an appropriate individualized education program. It was administered as an online course during the Summer. Students were required to complete a 10-15 hour placement to help assist in the identification of and characteristics of exceptional learners.

EDL 577: TECHNOLOGY FOR SCHOOL LEADERS

 

This course services the Instructional Leadership and the Instructional Technology programs. It includes information about the management of IT at a school and/or district leadership level. The section I taught was administered as an online course during Summer II.
