Improving Practice: Community Stakeholders and Professors as Co-Educators in a University Classroom

We describe the creation of an authentic learning experience for pre-service teacher candidates in an elementary classroom management course. This learning experience required pre-service teacher candidates to create a research-based classroom management plan throughout the semester. Next, the pre-service teacher candidates presented their plans and procedures at a mock “Meet the Teacher.” We also describe how community stakeholders served as mock parents for this event and how pre-service teacher candidates felt presenting to people they did not know. There were valuable reflections and lessons learned from both pre-service teacher candidates and community stakeholders through this real-world learning experience.

Community partnerships: Leveraging service learning in small teacher preparation programs

Journal of Special Education Article.png

During semester-long courses in inclusive methods and beginning reading instruction, pre-service teacher candidates participate in weekly tutoring sessions with elementary students in grades K-5. We outline principles identified for effective service-learning and describe how to embed them to integrate community service. We discuss service-learning with academic skills and content in mind, as well as reflection related to the experience, while ensuring the service-learning partnership includes the voice of the community partner. Lastly, a phase-by-phase guide for teacher educators is presented that we used in our small teacher preparation program through literacy instruction.

Online & Traditional Assessments:
Kahoot vs. Timed Quizzes

Metamorphosis.png

Many students and teachers alike appreciate the quiz game Kahoot! when used as an additive to normal classroom proceedings, such as in a review session, or as a formative assessment. However, Kahoot! may be useful in a more formal light in order to increase grades and engagement with classroom assessments. This research seeks to determine how utilizing Kahoot! in place of a formal assessment affects learning outcomes when used on a single math skill in a fourth-grade classroom.

Coding in the K-12 Classroom

Computers are a part of almost every industry and are changing the way we live. Equally, this is true in education because computers and technology are used to deliver curriculum and offer opportunities for students to interact with technology. To better understand the role of computing in the world, we need to dive deeper and educate students on the basics of computer science.

Preparing More Technology-Literate Preservice Teachers: A Changing Paradigm in Higher Education

When one considers the skills a student today must have to be successful, being technologically literate is one of the first that comes to mind. Twenty-first-century students need to know more than technical terminology and how to download their favorite apps.

Teachers' Perceptions and Attitudes of One Teacher Laptop Initiative: Connections Toward 21st Century Learning

This mixed-methods study analyzed the attitudes and perceptions of teachers following the implementation of a teacher laptop initiative. Data suggested that following the teacher laptop initiative participants in this study perceived they increased their computer use and began to adopt technology in the classroom.

Working With WebQuests

With the evolution of technology, students can now take online classes that may not be offered in their home schools. While online courses are commonly found in many high schools, WebQuests are used more commonly in elementary schools. Through the exploration of WebQuests, students are able to integrate the Internet into classroom activities.

Using Innovation Stations for STEM/STEAM Instruction

This 3-hour workshop was chosen to be presented at the International Society for Technology Education Conference. Participants were given the opportunity to experience STEM/STEAM concepts firsthand through Innovation Stations. These stations allowed participants to experiment with coding and robotics and explore computer science curricula.
